DREAM Leadership Conference

Today was sure one busy day to say the least, but it was one of the most fun days of the year thus far. Today was the DREAM Leadership Conference where teams of 20 people from each hall on Central Michigan Universities campus, some halls teamed up and had about 40 people on teams. Overall, there was a large turnout and my halls theme for the Cereal themed Conference was Captain Crunch. The following clip is the Mock Rock that our hall put together! I was voted the "Most Spirited Male" who attended the conference which was quite surprising because even though I knew I was crazy both on and off the stage. During the start of the video I am the 4th person from the right. Make sure you follow me throughout the routine because I pull a few things out of my pants and I just may end the routine with less clothes on then I started with! =)

Many of you may not have been aware that today, January 21st, is National Hug Day, but I am here to relay this message to you that today should be one of everyone's favorite days of the year. An everyday occurrence such as a smile, a simple acknowledgement from a passerby, a compliment, or a hug can go a long way in making somebody's day. There are many hugs that range from but are not limited to the 'I Love You Hug,' the 'I Want You Now Hug,' my personal favorite the 'Butt Squeeze Hug,' the ever so thrilling 'Ecstatic Jump in Arms Hug,' then the more traditional Friendly, Encouraging, Group or Half hugs, and not to mention the ever so popular Tree Hug!

A hug is not just confined and limited to two people wrapping their arms around each other but more like a handshake from the heart. It is a symbol of a universal language of love, comfort, and friendship not just for fathers and mothers, but also to be shared among sisters and brothers. A hug is a compassionate connection that people share, which finds a way to show the love that we are feeling when we just can not find the words to say. A hug from a friend can catch your tears and relieve the lingering pain, and bring a bright horizon after the storm with a beautiful rainbow after the rain. So I ask all of you to embrace and celebrate this great holiday by just opening up your arms along with your hearts without any delay, by just giving a friendly inviting smile and give someone a hug today!

Yesterday, the Pew Research Center released a new poll about race relations in the U.S. Here’s what they found . . .

According to the survey, 39% of blacks say that African-Americans are better off now than five years ago. That’s up from just 20% in 2007.

But 81% of blacks say more changes are still needed to ensure equality. Only 47% of Hispanics and 36% of whites agree. And here’s something kind of interesting . . .

When asked how well they get along with Hispanics, more than 70% of whites and blacks say they get along with Hispanics “very well” or “pretty well.”

But only about HALF of all Hispanics say they get along with whites and blacks “very well” or “pretty well.” (–In other words, that friendly Latino landscaper you like so much? Yeah, he hates your guts.)

Overall, nearly FOUR in FIVE American-born Hispanics say they feel at least some discrimination against their group.

And maybe the craziest thing the survey uncovered is that blacks are NOT the most discriminated group anymore. According to ALL respondents, 23% think Hispanics are discriminated against “a lot.”

That’s compared to 18% for blacks, 10% for whites and 8% for Asians.

Super Chargers Electric Glide to a Super Bowl?

LaDainian Tomlinson, who used to be them most prolific running back in the NFL, has taken a back seat and has handed Philip Rivers the key to the San Diego Chargers offense this past season. The video below is probably one of the most cheesiest, yet hilarious things I have ever seen a professional athlete take part in. I suppose this explains why he has fallen down the list of the top running backs in the league by making up these ridiculous dance moves when he should be prancing into the end zone. I would love to hear the remix to this song, some key lyrics could possibly be "blow out your knee, blow out your knee", or "choke in the playoffs, choke in the playoffs" since over his illustrious career he has had to sit out during the big games, especially in the playoffs due to injury. I have, and will admit to, picking the San Diego Chargers to win the Super Bowl against the New Orleans Saints, well before the season even started. I picked them not because of of Mr. Tomlinson, but for Philip Rivers and his weapons he has at his disposal on the offensive side of the field with Vincent Jackson, Malcolm Floyd, and Antonio Gates who are all big physical receivers who are a nightmare matchups for any defense to gameplan against. Then who can forget Darren Sproles, who is lightning in a bottle on special teams and out of the backfield as a receiver especially who can put a quick six on the scoreboard and turn the momentum of any game around in a flash. With all of these weapons, don't forget LaDainian Tomlinson, who could possibly Electric Glide into the end zone.

High School Musical sensation Vanessa Hudgens may never live down her most public scandalous act of sending nude pictures to one of her boy toys. Just imagine what scandalous acts Ms. Hudgens does behind closed doors? I would never be caught dead sending nude pictures of myself, mostly because I would never want to traumatize or blind anyone in society. Of course, let's leave it to no one else but Dane Cook to call her out about it at an award's show. This hilarious video that always brings a smile to my face was brought to my attention by some of my new friends I made over winter break.

Lane Kiffin Voluntarily Leaves the Volunteers!

What standards and obligations do coaches have to their players? The sporting world has seen to much of this over the past few months. Just a few that come to mind is the case of Brian Kelly leaving the unbeaten Cincinnati Bearcats to take the Notre Dame head coaching job just before the bowl game against mighty All-Everything Tim Tebow and the Florida Gators. Butch Jones leaves the MAC Champion Central Michigan to head to the vacancy left by Kelly before the teams GMAC bowl game.

How can these coaches just get up and leave whenever they please when more money comes knocking at their door when athletes nowadays have to attend at least one year of college before advancing to the professional level? The bottom line is that money talks, and coaches will just head to greener pastures and a more comfortable bank account when the opportunity comes calling, no matter how much blood, sweat, and tears their athletes have given to them.

Then comes Lane Kiffin, who said he "couldn't wait to sing Rocky Top all night long as they beat Florida", which did not happen as he lost to Urban Meyer at the swamp 23-13 and got dominated in what would be his final game wearing the Tennessee orange against Virginia Tech in the Chick Fil'A Bowl 37-14, and the game was not even that close. Kiffin will now head to USC after just 14 months being the head coach of the Volunteers along with his father Monte Kiffin who was the defensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won a Super Bowl. During his short lived time at Tennessee he named his new born son 'Knox,' probably was not anticipating moving to Southern California at the time of his wife's delivery. In just less than 2 years he has moved from the head coach of the Oakland Raiders, to head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, now back to the west coast being the new head man of the USC Trojans. The only question now is, would Lane Kiffin make a better travel agent than head coach?

Being a broadcast major, I have an even greater level of respect for what this video accomplished. With the World Series currently being played, this is the biggest stage of these players career. With the stakes high and the focus and intensity at such an elevated level, their emotions may at times get the best of them and cause them to lose their composure and do something out of character. I am sure in everyone of our lives we have been overwhelmed by something that was getting the best of us and performed an action that was out of character. With the video below, it shows how even in the heat of a battle, a persons character can outshine the stars on field and do a deed that is beyond their call of duty. Being in my second year of college, I have a fair amount of experience about what to expect when I enter a college classroom and the challenges that people face when living on a college campus. College students have a rigorous demanding lifestyle ranging from taking care of their personal needs, studying and retaining information for class, dealing with the distraction of technology, and many other factors that contribute to the amount of stress that students face everyday. As stated in the previous post, technology has become an instrumental component of our everyday lives, but it is about how we utilize this technology to either benefit or hinder our well-being. Technology impacts college students both inside and outside of the classroom. Students bring their laptops, cell phones, and ipods to class which in turn distracts them from the purpose of attending class. Outside of the classroom there are other outlets of technology that when abused turn into distractions that prevent the students from getting tasks done such as television, radio, computers, and music. It is not just the students who abuse the technology, not all instructors utilize the available technology to engage with their students more effectively to maximize the quality of learning taking place in the classroom. Such "fads" existed like Pokemon, Beanie Babies, Pogs, bowl cuts/mullets, the Macarena, and boy band music like N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys who I personally rock out to in the car with the volume cranked up and the windows down still to this day. However, those fads have come and gone and a new generation has begun. Most would classify the present day "fads" as Myspace, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, smart phones, Ipods/Itunes, and Google. Do you believe that these current "fads" will fade like its followers from the past, or is this just the beginning of the Social Media Revolution? You be the judge. Take a look around and you, and it is clear to see that these social networks are changing and refining the way our society communicates with each other. Today is the day where we can all indulge in one of our greatest guilty pleasures without being judged, even if we may be Chocoholics! So does this mean that I am obligated to buy my girlfriend, if I actually had one, a box of chocolates? Chocolate without a doubt is delicious, scrumptious, pleasing, and a key to any woman's heart, unless your a "janitor" like myself and can open the door to any woman's heart without having to buy her chocolates. However, for you less unfortunate beings out there, such as yourself, God made Chocolate to benefit your love life, taste buds, and believe it or not your health.
